Avoiding Scams and False Leads
Sadly, there are people who try to exploit pet owners during the stressful time of a lost cat. Stay alert and protect yourself:
Text Message Scams: You may receive a message from someone claiming they’ve found your cat but can’t provide a photo. Unless they share a clear, recent picture or highly specific details that only someone who truly has your cat would know, do not engage. If they refuse to send a photo, it’s a scam—100% of the time.
Social Media “Experts”: Ignore comments urging you to hire a “local drone expert” or similar services. Drones are expensive and rarely effective, as cats tend to stay hidden rather than out in the open.
Money Requests: Never send money to anyone unless you can fully verify who they are and exactly what they will do. Scammers prey on desperation—don’t let them take advantage of yours.
Instead, focus on proven recovery methods, stay cautious, and trust that real helpers in your community will assist simply because they care.
